نبذة الناشر:"The Iran-Saudi conflict, a pivotal rivalry in the Middle East, has been a key feature of regional politics since the 1979 revolution in Iran. This rivalry, marked by periods of escalation and calm, took a significant turn following the so-called Arab Spring in 2011.
This series of uprisings across the ...region created fertile ground for the escalation of conflict between the two countries, particularly given their involvement in the crises in Syria and Yemen.
Their competition escalated into a full-blown conflict, with both sides using political and economic tools, as well as soft and hard power, to inflict reciprocal damage. In this geopolitical context, Iran, leveraging its alliance with the Syrian regime, extended support to its proxy in Yemen, thereby establishing it as a counterforce to Saudi Arabia.
On the other hand, Saudi Arabia, sought to safeguard Syria, a strategically significant Arab state, from Iran’s expansionist attempts. Additionally, the kingdom positioned itself as a defender of Sunni Muslims in Syria and initiated a military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen, recognizing this proxy as a significant threat to its own national security.
This book delves into critical questions regarding Iranian and Saudi capacities to fulfill their respective regional roles while examining the impact of internal and external challenges on their roles. On March 10, 2023, a reconciliation agreement mediated by China was reached in Beijing between the two regional powerhouses, restoring diplomatic relations and collaboration across multiple sectors.
This reconciliation reflects the prevailing regional trend of embracing a “zero problems” foreign policy and prioritizing national interest. While the agreement has the potential to address existing disagreements, resolving regional crises ultimately hinges on the genuine commitment of the involved parties to resolve their conflict. As such, their actual actions and adherence to the agreement will serve as crucial indicators of their intentions. "
