نبذة الناشر:Translating Culture: A Textbook is not the first tackles the formidable problems of translating culture; a huge number of papers have been published about the subject. However, probably, it is the first of its type in relation to presentation, organization, comprehensibility and comprehensiveness as a Textbook.
Another new point is ...perhaps the introduction for the first time of Three Gestalt Translation Strategies in terms of which translating cultural terms of different categories is approached with the aim to make the burden of translating them for students of translation and translators less demanding.
The first Introductory Chapter of this Textbook introduces the main and lines of argument about translating culture to be investigated and confirmed later in the next Chapters of the book. It asserts that culture is Adoption, Reconciliation and Clash in relation to the other culture.
Chapter Two has tackled the translation of religious culture both directions, with special focus on Islamic culture (Arabic - English) and Christianity (English - Arabic). Adoption of Arabic-Islamic culture into English-Christian culture is much more than the other way round, Reconciliatory terms between Islam and Christianity are greater in number than expected. However, the clashing terms are numerous, but tricky, most important and sensitive in translation.
As to Chapter Three on translating social culture, it is quite diverse. Due to particular reasons, Arabic Language has adopted the English cultural terms either by transliteration, or calques. However, clashing terms of sensitive nature are many and cause several serious translation problems.
In Chapter Four on translating political culture, a great number of political cultural terms are adopted into Arabic for English political culture is the powerful culture the world over. Next comes clashing political cultural terms, followed by reconciliatory terms which are so few.
The Fifth Chapter, the final in the book, has investigated the translation of the linguistic cultural terms, including mental and emotional cultural terms. Many of these terms of the two languages concerned are reconciliatory, followed by adoptive expressions. Yet, a third huge group of words and phrases of the two languages involves a clash with one another in some way, either linguistically, mentally, literarily or emotionally from a cultural perspective.
Throughout, there has been a mine of applications at the level of individual words and terms in both languages concerned, illustrating the theoretical argument set forward in terms of ADOPTION, RECONCILIATION and CLASH. Hence, to compensate for the absence of applications to longer cultural texts of different categories, a separate, long part of APPLICATIONS has been assigned for texts of variable lengths next to this Chapter with the aim of covering translating all types of cultural texts outlined earlier in practice.
Last but not least, it is the hop of the writer of this book that translating culture will become less demanding than before by narrowing down the many strategies suggested by translation theory books to three fundamental ones: adoption (or acculturation), reconciliation (or cross- culturalization) and clash (or anti-culturalization).
Finally, Translating Culture: A Textbook is intended to be one more Volume (the SEVENTH) in a series of 10-Volume Translation Textbooks (English-Arabic-English) (the previous SEVEN are: (1) Translation as Problems and Solutions: A Textbook (2008); (2) Cognitive Stylistic and Translator (2011); (3) Translating the Media and Political Idiom: A Textbook (2012a); (4) Arabization from A to Z: A Textbook (2012b); (5) A Textbook of Literary Translation (2013); (6) Translating Islamic Texts: A textbook (2014); and (7) Translation Skills: A Textbook (2015).
