نبذة الناشر:This Textbook is claimed to fill in the gap of lacking rigorous, methodological and well-planned English-Arabic English textbooks for University students of translation and translation on translating literature.
It attempts to lay solid grounds for translating the two major literary genres: Prose (i.e. the Short Story and the Novel in particular) ...and Poetry, due to their recurrence in language and translation studies and applications.
These grounds are based on how to construct creative, style-based literary translation into the Target Language that may compete, or, at least, match the original, that is, "how to translate literature into literature".
The cornerstone of this approach is the construction into the other language of the stylistic features of literariness of the literary texts that make them into literary. So any translation of literature to be literary should be equally literary and creative.
And since creativity lies in style, these stylistic features of literariness are what the whole approach of this work counts on.
Hence, the suggestion of the literary style-based method of translation, ‘creative literary stylistic translation’.
Among the main stylistic features of literariness and at the same time the features of creative literary stylistic translation are: ‘creativity, figurativeness, aesthetics, inventiveness, pragmaticality, tone, reasonance, emotionality, human feelings, (frozen / classical) formality, flexibility, humility and captivation (of TL readers)'.
All these and other key theoretical issues about the specifications of literary translation represent the nature of the approach to literary translation adopted in this textbook.
They are investigated in detail in the first three chapters (1-3), followed by extensive applications in the next three ones on the translation of Short Story, Novel and Poetry (4-6) in succession.
The practical approach of the book in the latter chapters leans heavily on drawing a comparison in a juxtaposed form between the two polarized versions of translation of each of the texts concerned: ‘Literary Translation' vs. 'Ordinary Translation' (chs. 4 & 5) and 'Poetic Translation' vs. 'Poetical Translation' (ch. 6).
It is the hope of the author that the approach to literary translation put forward in this book in theory and practice responds satisfactorily to some tricky questions about the possibility, validity, credibility and other substantial requirements of the a creative literary translation, compared to ordinary translation.
The textbook is intended by the author to be one more volume (the FIFTH) in a series of 10-Volume Translation Encyclopaedia and Textbooks (English-Arabic-English) (the first four are Translation as Problems and Solutions: A Textbook (2008/2012), Cognitive stylistics and the Translation (2011) and Translating the Media and Political Idiom: A textbook (2012a) and Arabization from A to Z: A Textbook (2012b).
HASAN SAID GHAZALA: is currently a Professor of Stylistics and Translation at the English Department, Umm Al-Qura Unversity, Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Saudi Arabia.
