In writing its book we have put forward the current issues and techniques in strategic technological planning in the form of a self-contained course rather than as a summary style textbook. Our "mission" has been to develop a textbook that moves beyond being simply descriptive, and we have instead adopted a more critical approach and attempted to be prescriptive or suggestive where possible.
The book is directed at core issues of real concern and direct applicability to planning. Consequently, we use a focused approach rather than seek to cover a wide set of issues but deal with them too lightly to be of real use to strategic planning (STP) or develop students’ critical skills. Questions and exercises have been set throughout the text with the aim of reinforcing the reader’s understanding of the key issues, and this is backed up by illustrations and examples taken from the business world. The end result (hopefully!) is a book that is accessible to the non-specialist or practicing planner, while also being useful for the business studies or MBA student.
