In this sense, it constitutes much more than a monographic disquisition on "the state of the field". It is a comprehensive stock taking of the performance and ...methods of orientalist discourse in the very wide array of fields which have taken an interest in ibn khaldun: arabic philology, sociology, historigraphy, philosophy, and others.
The basis for this is laid in the first part which consists of an analysis of the structure of the muqaddima and a study of the conceptual content of the philology and translation of ibn khaldun. The second and third parts of the book treat the literature on ibn khaldun by professional orientalists and by historians and sociologists. The main species of theses concerning ibn khaldun in various fields of scholarship are weighed against the text of the great thinker and against the cultural and sociological realities of his age, as well as again as criteria of plausibility which are today a matter of course in the social sciences to the exclusion of speculation on oriental subjects. Finally, the author provides the lineaments of a new reading of ibn khaldun and of his culture.
