Included in the work is information based upon numerous interviews with egyptians who were personally involved in the wafd its successes and defeats. The impact of various social movements such as the emancipation of women, development of workers movements, and student activism is also described. The question as to whether the wafd was actually a revolutionary party or a bourgeois nationalist party is scrutinized. The author concludes that 1919 was probably the only real revolution that egypt has experienced in modern times, but that the wafd merely emerged out of that time and did not create or ultimately achieve the gaals of the 1919 revotution.
