Britain was never able to pursue a cohesive policy in palestine because it was beholden to two contradictory political commitments. In The hussein mcmahon correspondence britain was pledged to support an independent arab state comprising the hijaz and the arab provinces of the ottoman empire including palestine. Yet in the balfour declaration britain promised to sponsor a national home for the jews in palestine. After world war, I despite arab pressure the british commitment to zionism persisted.
The arabs tried to deflect the anglo-zionist convergence by attempting to prove that the jewish national homeland constituted a grave injustice to the arabs in addition to being impracticable and contrary to the interests of britain. Numerous arab revolts and protestations against zionism and british policies in palestine were however not able to bring about a change of british policy in the area.
