Since the trio of summits — the China-Saudi, China-GCC and China-Arab — convened during Xi’s visit to Riyadh in December 2022 and subsequent mediation by Beijing in brokering a deal to restore diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, there has been a mounting anticipation surrounding the broadening scope of China’s envisioned role in the Gulf and wider Middle East. Questions linger whether this role will be confined to diplomatic mediations or could potentially expand to encompass security dimensions as well.
Undoubtedly, China’s ever-growing interest in the region presents a multitude of opportunities and challenges for the countries within its sphere of influence. This necessitates a careful examination of its implications for regional dynamics amidst the backdrop of great power competition. Henceforth, the Emirates Policy Center has meticulously scrutinized these interactions, exploring the priorities of the Chinese leadership in the region, their impact on the strategic interests of regional countries, the preferences of the US and the resultant ripple effects thereof.
