Russia is a state which occupies a special place in the contemporary international system. Like China Russia does not form part of a group of highly developed states sharing common fundamental values and political institutions, with closely intertwined economic systems and a ramified network of common military and military-political organizations. However, due to its vast economic and military potential, Russia continues to play a major role in ensuring global security.
