نبذة الناشر:This study examines the complex challenge of national reconciliation in Ethiopia following the Tigray War, one of the most devastating conflicts in the country’s modern history with devastating humanitarian impacts. Focused on transitional justice, the analysis considers Ethiopia’s post-conflict trajectory in the context of broader debates on peacebuilding, accountability, and ...state reconstruction.
Through comparative analysis of post-conflict experiences in Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria, key lessons for Ethiopia emerge. These include the importance of credible truth-seeking processes, the need to balance retributive and restorative justice, and the central role of inclusive, locally owned reconciliation mechanisms. Also highlighted are the risks of politicized justice, delayed institutional responses, and top-down approaches that fail to engage affected communities.
Reconciliation in Ethiopia requires a comprehensive approach that integrates justice, institutional reform, and socio-economic recovery. The conflict not only exposed deep-rooted ethnic and political divisions within Ethiopia’s federal system, but also eroded state legitimacy, weakened public trust, and pushed the country toward conditions associated with fragile or failing states. In this context, transitional justice emerges as a critical mechanism to address past abuses, rebuild trust, and prevent renewed violence.
In its conclusions, the analysis advances policy-relevant insights, emphasizing that sustainable peace in Ethiopia depends on aligning justice with reconciliation, prioritizing community-level engagement, and embedding reconstruction within a broader framework of political and social renewal. As Ethiopia navigates a fragile post-war environment, the findings offer a timely contribution to efforts to support long-term national cohesion. إقرأ المزيد
