Although railway building had begun as a purely economic project, it soon turned into a bone of contention among the European powers as a result of their political and ...economic rivalry; for their financial and technical involvement was subject to their political ambitions.
In the ottoman Empire, the various railway systems - Baghdad, Damascus, Hama, and Extensions, Hijaz - formed part of a whole. In Eygpt and the Sudan, railways were state-owned from the beginning. With the break-up of the Ottoman Empire, the railway systems were fragmented and bought by the emerging states of the area.
