As this book illustrates, the humble kitchen has come a long way. As well as being integral to large open-plan living areas, the contemporary kitchen often extends to outdoor living spaces. One of the most significant influences on modern kitchens has been a shift towards alfresco dining.
Another recent trend is a move towards the use of sophisticated materials in kitchens. Concrete poured in situ, American oak, cherry wood, Corian and marble can all feature.
