نبذة نيل وفرات:In this very readable and entertaining book, Mr. Crawford relates the story of six evacuations of American residents in Beirut and vicinity, from 1828 to 1967. The first two evacuations, in 1828 and 1840, were rather on a limited scale and concerned primarily the American missionaires in Beirut. But ...the latter four during the last fifty years, i.e. from 1917-1967, were far more serious and the author himself was personally involved in them either as '' a participant or an organizer''. They are, indeed, part of his personal experiences and private diaries.
The author gives also a brief account of the history of Lebanon, of the early Americans in Beirut; and the eventual expansion of the American Community, now engaged in various educational institutions, banking establishments, business firms and diverse occupations.
Mr. Crawford has been on the scene when much Near Eastern history was in the making during the laste half a century. Hence, his present work will be read with the highest interest as it reflects the political upheavals and complex problems of this part of the world. إقرأ المزيد
