The words, phrases and expressions chosen for this book are based on the colloquial Arabic spoken in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. This, of course, does not mean that you'll not be understood in Iraq if you use these phrases. It just means that there are certain dialectical differences between Arabic as used by Iraqis, Egyptians, Syrians, Lebanese and Jordanians. But these differences are not so pronounced as to make the dialects of Iraq or Egypt unintelligible to a Syrian or a Lebanese.
Allow us here to get in a word of advice. You'll hear many people tell you Arabic is difficult; they will try to discourage you from using it. Classical Arabic is difficult, but not so spoken Arabic. It's just as easy or difficult as any language as you'll see after having become familiar with this booklet. Again many people will tell you, ''Why bother to learn a foreign language. You can get along anywhere in the world by speaking only English''. That is quite true: you can get along but you'll be missing a great deal by not knowing the language of the country. You'll neither ba able to make friends nor have any enjoyable experiences the memories of which you can carry back home wiyh you.
Lastly do not be afraid to use Arabic, no matter how badly you may pronounce it at first. Remember one can learn only by making mistakes. إقرأ المزيد
