نبذة الناشر:The aim of this new dictionary is twofold: to supplement the basic scientific and technological vocabulary of learners whose experience of English has been restricted to ' general ' texts, in order to bring their knowledge closer to that of native speakers of English at a comparable level of education; ...and to introduce, in a systematic way, a number of items from various scientific and technological fields in order to facilitate study within those fields.
There are some 2,000 entries; the scientific or technological meaning of each word is supplied and, where the definition may not be sufficient, examples of the word in use have been added.
Coverage includes:
-Words that occur most often in a single scientific or technological context; for example, atom, electron, neutron.
-Words that occur only in such contexts; for example alternator, capacitor, systemic.
-Words familiar to many learners in their basic or literary senses, but which have a particular meaning in scientific or technological texts; for example, element, phase, period.
Most items are given with phonetic transcription using symbols from the International Phonetic Alphabet.
A helpful feature is the indication of a ' word field' where relevant. This system aids the user in identifying the branch of science or technology in which a word is chiefly used. The broad categories covered are biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine and physics, although many sub-divisions are applied. إقرأ المزيد
