نبذة نيل وفرات:The aim of this dictionary is to list the most commonly used English words and phrase, with simple definitions and examples of usage. Selection of such words is naturally subjective, and particularly difficult because of the constraints of the size of the dictionary, but we have taken as a ...basis an expanded version of the word list used in Harrap's smaller bilingual dictionaries. The dictionary is basically British, but common American words and phrases are given, and American spellings have been included for all major headwords. Examples of usage have been given for most words, and in some cases very many examples are quoted as we feel that the use of a word in context is potentially of considerable help to the user in expanding the definition. The articles are split up-with numbers in bold type according to various parts of speech which the word can form. Differences of meaning within each subdivision are shown by small italic leters. Irregular plurals or verb forms are shown in bold type, and usage is indicated either by notes in italic or by various abbreviated labels. Americanisms are labelled Am.; words which are common in informal-usually spoken-speech are labelled inf., while words shown as formal are more likely to be used in writing than in speech.
Headwords are listed alphabetically, but subsidiary headwords or compounds derived from them are listed in the distinctive headword type-face but within the text of the paragraph.
Phonetics are shown as a guide to the pronunciation of all headwords, together with those subsidiary words where the pronunciation differs in some way from that of the main word. إقرأ المزيد
