نبذة نيل وفرات:The quotations in this book have been selected primarily for their qualities of succinctness, perception, and wit. Many well-known quotations by major authors have been included, but the main criterion for the inclusion of a quotation has been that it should make an original or colourful observation about life. ...Such quotations, whether they are from speeches or plays, poetry or prose, are potentially useful to the writer or speaker who is looking for something to illustrate a point and is in need of an apt quotation. They also form an in interesting introduction to the life, work, or personality of their authors, as well as providing entertaining reading.
An effort has been made to make this selection widely representative and fully up to date. Foreign quotations are given in in English where they are best known in this form or in the original language (with a translation) where that is more familiar. Equal weight has been given to the humorous and the serious so as to reflect all aspects of life from the sternly philosophical to the broadly comical.
The quotations are arranged under their authors' names, which are listed alphabetically with a brief biographical description. Additional informatiom is provided for quotations which are set in a specific context or which refer to a particular person or thing. The names of characters in plays and novels are given wherever such information is useful and references to the sources of quotations have been made as full as possible. Within the entry for each author, quotations are arranged in alphabetical order of sources in the case of novels, plays, poems, and other books, and in chronological order in the case of speeches, broadcasts, etc. In the entry for George Bernard Shaw, for example, quotations from the plays are listed first, then a quotation from a novel, and finally miscellaneous and attributed remarks. إقرأ المزيد
