نبذة الناشر:During the period spanning World War II, intense military struggles occurred for control of the Arab region, precipitating the involvement of new political players on the Arab stage. Sudden political and military changes in the Arab world also had significant repercussions on the progress of the war in other areas ...of the conflict.
The documents in this volume show that in these years interference by British resident officials in the internal affairs of the Arab states became marked, sometimes even taking the form of direct political action, with the forcible removal from office of the Iraqi and Egyptian governments which were considered unfriendly to Britain, and initatives to counter the pressures exerted by the Free French on the nationallists in Syria and Lebanon. As these measures indicate, Britain's involvement in the affairs of the Arab region from a stronghold in Oman not only became more radical but also expanded in geopolitical terms after 1941, when the British military played a leading role in the expulsion of the pro-Vichy forces from the Levant states, and by doing so gained the upper hand in influencing events there in the face of free French oppositon. Such actions were taken in the name of 'security' during the war years, and by the end of the World War II, Britain had emerged as the dominant power in the Arab Middle East.
