نبذة الناشر:The story of Makkah starts with the prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). He brought his wife Hagar and young son Ismaill to his valley and they dwelt next to the Bayt-Allah (house of god). The prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) also established the Hajj: "And proclaim the pilgrimage among men; they ...will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys of through deep and distant mountain highway,"(Quran xxll:27)
Four thousand years since Hagar and Islamil first drank from the well of Zamzam, and 1400 years after the Prohet Muhammad (pbuh), the city of Makkah remains at the center, and is the ultimate destination, of the Muslim journey of faith.
Even as late as the 1940s, there were only a few tens of thousands of pilgrims who made the difficult journey to Makkah. The pilgrims mixed with the local population, lived in their houses and even married the Makkawis. Makkah was a centre of leaening. Residents of the city spoke many languages and it was a most cosmopolitan and tolerant place to live. The city was a sponge that absorbed and become one with the pilgrims.
Recent years have seen a phenomenal rise in the number of pilgrims. The ancient city fabric has been transformed what remains will soon disappear. The old families of Makkah have, by and large, moved out to other cities. The city and other population are in a period of rapid change and the sheer scale of transformation is daunting. High rise building, motorways and high speed trains have arrived. The worlds tallest concrete building, 602 meters high, has just been completed.
It is in this context that is this book gathers some insights, photographs and information from half a dozen contemporary Islamic scholars. Makkah past and present provides a mich-needed historical background for the city of Makkah, thus enabling the reader to gain a broader understanding of the people, culture, and history of this holy city.
By exploring the city of Makkah in the context of its early roots, and throughout various staged of history, the reader can experience what it was like to visit Makkah in other centuries. The result is an information and entertaining guide that enables pilgrims, visitors and innabitants yo gain a richer and deeper understand of this ancient and holy city.
In the journey of a thousand miles to makkah, let this book be the first step. May you, by yhe Grace of God, find that which feeds your soul, Inshallah.
