It is preceded by Webster's Study Dictionary and followed by Webster's Dictionary of Current English. Webster's Study Dictionary is intended for use primarily by students in middle high schools and middle ...schools. The range of the vocabulary covered is suited to the needs of older students, but the definitions have been written in everyday langauge that young students will find clear.
Webster's Study Dictionary will give you all the information you would expect to have about how words are spelled, how they are pronounced, and what they mean; moreover it also has a number of features found in more advanced Merriam-Webster dictionaries.
Webster's Study Dictionary can become a very valuable book to you, helping you with your studies and answering many of your questions about the words of English. It is not a book to be read once and set aside; instead, you will want to pick it up again and again.
The more you use it, of course, the more useful it will become to you. Using dictionary well is not always an easy and obvious matter, however. The editors of your dictionary have used a variety of type styles and a number of special words, abbreviations, and symbols to help them pack as much information as they possibly could into a small space for you. Just how you should understand these signals is explained fully in the next section, called "Using Your Dictionary".
